I am commanded by the Army Council to acknowledge receipt of Colonial Office letter No.53548/37 of 31st August, 1937, forwarding a letter dated 27th August, 1937, from Messrs Jardine, Matheson and Company Limited.

I am to state for the information of Mr. Secretary Ormsby Gore that the policy of the Army Council is that pending further developments there should be no interference with ordinary commercial transactions between British firms and China or Japan, and that this policy is governed by Foreign office letter No.F.5548/9/10 dated the 25th August, 1937, to the Board of Trade, a copy of which is attached.

A copy of this letter is being sent to the Foreign Office, Admiralty, Air Ministry and Board of Trade.
